Designing a piece of jewellery is always an exciting process, and for me, it begins with a simple yet profound question:
"What is the message?"
So, when Anna approached me to create a jewellery collection that would resonate with Good Girl Rebels - Check out Good Girl Rebellion to see if you're a rebel too - I knew this was an opportunity not to miss. As someone who has experienced Anna’s transformative coaching first-hand, I was eager to take on this challenge. We shared not only a commitment to overcoming the "good girl" mindset but also a passion for empowering women to step into their power and follow their dreams.
So the message for this collection was crystal clear: Empower the Good Girl Rebel. But the journey from concept to creation involved more than just designing jewellery; it was about capturing the essence of Anna’s coaching and infusing it into each piece.
In many ways, this process reminded me of working with clients on bespoke jewellery pieces. When you collaborate closely with someone, you’re not just designing a piece of jewellery —you’re bringing their vision to life. My approach is methodical and thoughtful, grounded in my product design background. Rather than diving headfirst into sketches, I start by defining key elements and motifs that will anchor the process. This step is where the magic begins—chatting one-on-one with someone to uncover the design that's just beneath the surface.
For the Good Girl Rebellion Collection, Anna and I chose to incorporate her favourite font, Lemon, a daring and playful script that mirrors the balance of boldness and delicacy we wanted to evoke. Floral motifs were another natural choice, symbolising growth and beauty—core themes of her the Rebellion. We also decided to incorporate a cut-out technique reminiscent of the Mantra collection, which we both loved for its ability to add depth and dimension to the pieces.
Side note - Anna's customised Mantra Ring was the spark for the whole project!
With these elements in place, I moved on to the most creative phase: sketching. This is where I let my imagination run wild, pouring all my inspiration onto the page. It’s a time for exploration and innovation, where the initial ideas take shape, often in unexpected ways. The creative outpouring isn’t just about producing a design; it’s about capturing the spirit of the collection and translating it into something tangible. This is why I like to have those anchored elements and motifs first, I want to keep them in mind with every design - and it can be easy to get carried away creatively!
After the sketches were complete, it was time to refine the designs. For a collection like this, which involved multiple pieces, I presented Anna with a range of options (quite a few!), highlighting my personal favourites. This stage is always a mix of excitement and anticipation, but knowing that Anna and I were aligned on the vision meant more excitement than nerves. When you’re on the same wavelength, the design process flows effortlessly and it's so much fun!
